Coir is made from the protective layer that surrounds the coconut. Extracting this natural, vegan lifestyle friendly fibre takes 12 months of sunshine before the nut has grown to full size. Just before the coconuts ripen, notched tree trunks are climbed and the fruit collected by hand. The nuts are then suspended in water for up to 10 months, after which they’re beaten to separate out the fibres. Once dried, the fibres are cleaned spun into yarn. The end product is an incredibly strong and durable flooring suitable for the areas which are subject to the most heavy usage.
Brocklehurst provides the specialist fitting required to install this flooring where the fitters will know how to accommodate for the natural properties of coir which is may expand and contract depending on the moisture present in the environment.
